The "bwJupyter for teaching" service provides members of teaching and research institutions in the state with a JupyterHub that can be used for courses at short notice and without a lengthy application process.

A.1) Who may use bwJupyter?

Fundamental restrictions on use (e.g. to members of teaching and research institutions of the state) result from the earmarking of the institutions that operate this service and the material restrictions to which the operators of the infrastructure are subject. The use of this service is limited to activities that take place

  • in the context of a course of study,
  • from teaching or learning events.

The activities described also specify the authorized user group of bwJupyter:

  • Persons who are enrolled as part of a course of study at a teaching or research institution in the state of Baden-Württemberg (students),
  • Persons who work as teachers at a teaching or research institution in the state of Baden-Württemberg (teachers) or
  • Persons who work as employees at a teaching or research institution in the state of Baden-Württemberg (employees & staff).
A.2) Requirements for the use of bwJupyter

The following technical and organizational requirements must be met in order to use bwJupyter:

  1. The home organization of the future bwJupyter user must participate in the federated identity management of the Baden-Württemberg universities bwIDM.
  2. The user must provide a valid and reachable e-mail address when registering. This e-mail address serves as a contact for important notifications from the bwJupyter operating group. The e-mail address must exist for the entire time the user uses bwJupyter. If a user can no longer be reached, the assigned instances and resources will be stopped until the matter has been clarified.
B.1) Who is not allowed to use bwJupyter?

The list of persons who are excluded from using bwJupyter is based on the description of the groups of persons in section A):

  • Persons who are not members at an institution or facility in Baden-Württemberg,
  • Accounts that are used by more than one person or accounts that are shared with several people (so-called functional accounts)
C.1) How long can bwJupyter be used?

In principle, there is no time limit on the scope of use. However, we reserve the right to limit storage space for types of use that are related to a course of study or that are subject to a (semester) cycle in order to control utilization and to provide interested parties who have not yet been considered with resources. In a first version, users are provided with a fixed storage quota (2 GB or 10 GB for a shared folder). A long-term, sustainable storage concept will be developed over the course of SS25. We reserve the right to reduce the individual storage volume. The bwJupyter users affected by this will be informed in good time and in advance.

No binding commitments are made regarding the availability or performance of the JupyterHub.

D.1) How may bwJupyter be used?

The guiding principle for the use of bwJupyter is based on the principle of

FAIR USE

since bwJupyter is a shared resource that is made available by the operating locations. All resources (compute and storage capacities, network capacities, etc.) are shared (for example in the network area) with other users of bwJupyter as well as with members of the operating institutions and organizations. If, for example, the network capacity is consumed excessively and one-sidedly by individual bwJupyter users, this not only affects the other bwJupyter users in the respective region, but in the worst case the entire university.

FAIR USE therefore means: Every bwJupyter user must behave in such a way that no one else is disturbed, hindered or impaired in any other way by their own activities.

If in doubt, please send an email to the bwJupyter operating group support∂bwjupyter.de describing the intended use. We will help with the evaluation and classification of the planned use of bwJupyter and clarify whether this can or cannot be realized with bwJupyter.

D.2) Dealing with critical situations

The central task of the bwJupyter operations group is therefore not only to ensure the normal operation of the bwJupyter infrastructure for the benefit of all bwJupyter users, but also to react quickly and promptly to critical situations.

  1. Since we generally do not (cannot) evaluate the activities carried out with the resources of bwJupyter, we ask the respective users of bwJupyter for a short feedback and statement on their activities in such individual cases.
  2. The bwJupyter decision-making team then assesses and weighs up the facts and information(individual case review).
  3. During this process, possible measures are communicated and implemented. These measures may range from toleration, toleration subject to conditions to the cessation of the activities concerned.
E.1) What may bwJupyter be used for?

The purpose of the use of bwJupyter results directly from the focus of the activities of the authorized users and from the nature of the promotion of the hardware. This means that bwJupyter may only be used for teaching and study purposes.

F.1) What may bwJupyter not be used for?

This list contains examples and descriptions of applications that may not be realized with the resources of bwJupyter. It is not exhaustive and is for illustrative purposes only. It will be continuously expanded or clarified as required.

  • bwJupyter may not be used or offered for the purpose of commercial exploitation, i.e. no resources from bwJupyter may be brokered to third parties or sold or rented directly or otherwise distributed in an unauthorized manner, unless appropriate permission has been granted.
  • bwJupyter may also not be used for non-commercial purposes that are not directly related to studying and teaching, unless permission has been granted.
  • bwJupyter may not be used for research projects.
  • In general, bwJupyter may not be used in a way that is contrary to the mission and purpose of the institution/organization or that of the institution/organization of the bwJupyter operating sites.
  • bwJupyter may not be used for (personal/individual/organizational) enrichment or to generate profits, for example through the use of special cryptocurrency programs (so-called "miners").
  • bwJupyter may not be used as an infrastructure for unauthorized actions. In particular, unauthorized access to protected content (e.g. publisher content) may not be carried out.

The operators of bwJupyter generally do not "look into" current profiles. This means that the bwJupyter operating group does not check the content. However, as soon as we become aware of possible violations of the terms of use of bwJupyter or other legal norms, we reserve the right to take appropriate steps and measures.

Please note: Do not store any personal and/or sensitive data or information in bwJupyter. We cannot offer a sufficient level of protection, for example to meet the requirements of ZENDAS with regard to data protection etc.

G.1) Prospects for use

As long as no official price and cost table has been communicated, the use of this service is free of charge, as the technical infrastructure and part of the personnel required for its operation are financed by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK). After the transfer to regular operation, the funding basis will change fundamentally. Although it is not yet possible to predict how the financing will develop, it is already clear that both the personnel and the technical infrastructure will be financed - initially in part, later predominantly - by the operators.

In order to be able to offer stable operation and a reliable basis for expansion and planning for both the operators and the users of bwJupyter, various proposals for cost models are currently being developed. All users will be informed in good time should corresponding fee models be decided and implemented.

As with any other service, the lifespan of this service also depends on its intensity of use. If it is only used to a rudimentary extent, it will be discontinued sooner or later. However, the operators undertake to inform users in good time (at least one year in advance) of an impending shutdown so that there is sufficient time to switch to alternatives.
